His family told the Associated Press that Dorough died Monday at his home in Mount Bethel, PA, but did not give a cause. The title track was later recorded by MILES DAVIS, which has since become a jazz standard.

Bob Dorough, whose career began as a composer, arranger and singer in the booming NY jazz scene of the '50s and '60s before he became the musical keystone of Schoolhouse Rock!

The ARKANSAS-born, TEXAS-raised DOROUGH was a composer, arranger and player in the Special Services Army Band before moving to NY to become a pianist and singer.

We invite you to share condolences for Bob Dorough in our Guest Book.

In 1971, Dorough was working a day job at a NY advertising company when his boss asked him to set the multiplication tables to music, figuring if kids could remember rock lyrics, it might help them learn math, according to NPR.

Dorough ended up writing "Three's a Magic Number". The movie and TV database IMDB says Dorough's credits from the series include memorable tunes like "Three Is a Magic Number", "Verb: That's What's Happening", and "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here".

Dorough wrote "Three is a Magic Number" - which was supposed to be a project called "Multiplication Rock", which eventually evolved into "School House Rock".

Watch a few of Bob's most famous Schoolhouse Rock clips, and listen to '90s indie rock tribute Schoolhouse Rocks Rocks (with Pavement, The Lemonheads, Biz Markie and more), below. Originally intended as a school workbook, the concept was pitched and sold to ABC executive Michael Eisner, becoming the first of the long-running Schoolhouse Rock! series of educational cartoons that became an all-but inseparable part of of '70s and '80s childhood.

According to NRP, Dorough continued to perform until his death, and was survived by his wife, Sally Shanley Dorough.
