  • First State holds latest Drug Take Back Day this weekend

Saturday was the 15th annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day where people turned in expired and unused drugs from their home medicine cabinets.

Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is hosted twice a year, in April and in October. In a study, the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse say 86 percent of heroin users used opioid pain relievers recreationally before they ever used heroin. NJCR provides a safe, confidential, nonjudgmental place that New Jersey residents may call to connect directly to Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors, Peer Specialists and Public and Private Insurance Specialists.

With the help of police, Erie County is urging people to get unwanted medications out of their homes and away from potential drug users. "Every single year it's declined in numbers".

Many police precincts had special collection boxes where anyone could do just that on Saturday.

All 30 Michigan State Police (MSP) posts also participate in the "Take-Back" initiative by serving as drop-off locations.

Law enforcement, pharmacies and other organizations across Minnesota are offering drop-off sites for unwanted, unused or expired prescription medications from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. Saturday. NJCR offers a series of programs statewide, including free family education workshops and insurance navigation community workshops.

"Who wants extra drugs around the house anyways?"

If you have old medications lying around today, there's a chance to get rid of them safely.
