According to Dr. Al Soub, those most at risk of serious illness associated with contracting the disease are individuals who have little or no immunity to malaria, such as young children and pregnant women or travelers coming from areas with no malaria.
"In the world today, an unprecedented number of people are on the move and migration can pose challenges to malaria control and elimination".
However, recent evidence suggests that the trend toward fewer malaria cases and deaths has stalled, or may have reversed course in some countries. Two years has passed and we are left with twelve years to achieving that goal. AfDB president Akinwumi Adesina told the African Leaders Malaria Alliance. The mosquito-borne disease can affect anyone.
Nearly half of the global population is susceptible to malaria but it is most prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. So, every year, April 25 is observed as World Malaria Day. Public Health Care (PHC) facilities can all test for malaria and treatment is available at this level. In 2016, malaria cases rose for the first time in a decade and there were 216 million cases of malaria and 445,000 deaths. "Fourteen countries with the world's biggest malaria problem are in sub-Saharan Africa, and account for 80% of the global burden", the report stated.
Total funding for malaria control and elimination reached an estimated US$ 2.7 billion in 2016.
However, pregnant women should avoid staying in areas where malaria is common; not only them but young children should also avoid playing in unsafe areas. This move should give Nigerians hope that the government is making arrangements to ending malaria by half on or before 2023 as stated by the Commonwealth Health Ministers' launch of the Commonwealth Nations Initiative at the Malaria Summit held last week in London.
In addition Malaria in pregnancy remains the main cause of maternal and child deaths in the County according to the County Director of Maternal and Child Survival Programme Cornelius Kondo.
African governments and global efforts have made great strides in combatting the scourge of disease on the continent.
The World Health Organization is joining a worldwide call to stop a resurgence of malaria that threatens much of the progress made over the past decade. Limited access to malaria prevention, including health education, and treatment before, during and after the migration process render migrants more vulnerable and impact progress to control, eliminate and eventually eradicate the disease. However, some countries lack the resources to do this effectively.
