The U.S. Senate confirmed CIA Director Mike Pompeo to be President Donald Trump's secretary of state on Thursday, ending a bruising confirmation fight with a comfortable vote.

Trump hailed the confirmation and congratulated Pompeo on becoming the 70th person to be named America's top diplomat.

President Donald Trump fired his first Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in March.

Nearly immediately after his confirmation, Pompeo was set to fly to Brussels to attend a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation foreign-ministers trip.

"Having a patriot of Mike's enormous talent, energy, and intellect leading the Department of State will be an incredible asset for our country at this critical time in history", Trump said in a statement.

Just after Pompeo's vote, the Senate is expected to vote on Richard Grenell to be the next Ambassador to Germany.

Pompeo's confirmation comes after weeks of uncertainty as to whether he would make it through the Senate at all, given the robust objection from almost every corner of civil society and with theearly opposition of Sen.

In the run-up to Pompeo's confirmation, his backers emphasized his resume as a West Point and Harvard Law School graduate and former congressman who enjoys a close relationship with Trump particularly on North Korea.

A long list of pressing issues awaits him including a decision on the Iran nuclear deal and Trump's upcoming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He inherits a State Department that has lost relevance under Trump and a diplomatic corps deeply dispirited by the tenure of Tillerson, who pushed budget and staff cuts and eschewed public appearances while leaving key diplomatic positions unfilled.

Pompeo enters his role as the top American diplomat amid seismic geopolitical changes in North Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Venezuela, and China.

Republicans repeatedly urged strong bipartisan backing for Pompeo, pointing out that only two of their members voted against former President Barack Obama's first secretary of state nominee, Hillary Clinton, in 2009, and only three Senate Republicans voted against John Kerry for the post in 2013. The path seems clear now for him to take over (as expected).

"As a junior foreign service officer, I signed an oath to serve faithfully the president and his administration in an apolitical fashion, even when I might not agree with certain policies", Feeley said.

But Paul's opposition proved flimsy earlier this week, when Paul caved to pressure from Trump and chose to support Pompeo, allowing him to advance out of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee with a favorable recommendation.
