Following their visit to the refugee camps in no man's land in Konarpara and Ukhiya's Kutupalong on Sunday where they interviewed the Rohingyas, the delegates said the gravity of the situation is awful, but it is not possible to solve the problem overnight.

Myanmar has denied the widespread accounts of violence against the persecuted Rohingya Muslim community in Rakhine.

Mansour said they should not raise the expectation about a quick solution but they want to help all the parties concerned to speed up the process on the implementation of the deal signed between the two countries.

"The trip is part of an effort by Aung San Suu Kyi's civilian government to fix its relations with the worldwide community and make good on a pledge to allow some of the people driven from their homes to return to northern Rakhine State, the centre of one of the world's worst humanitarian crises", it read.

The council adopted a formal statement in November - a move that requires consensus by the 15-member body - that asked Myanmar to ensure no "further excessive use of military force" and to allow "freedom of movement, equal access to basic services, and equal access to full citizenship for all".

Prior to the briefing, the delegation visited Kutupalong refugee camp and Tombru border in Bandarban's Naikhyangchhari to assess first-hand the plight of the refugees there.

"This is very complicated issue, and it's related with history, with ethnicity, with religions", Chinese deputy UN Ambassador Wu Haitao told reporters, in response to a question about whether China and Russian Federation were preventing the council from considering a resolution on Myanmar.

Refugees arriving in Bangladesh have said the forces they had fled raped and killed women and children as well as attacking men. He said his government would extent every possible assistance to the UNSC to resolve the conflict.

He said the UNSC team is touched by the stories of Rohingyas and realised that the root cause of Rohingya crisis lies in Myanmar.

"The problem has come from there (Myanmar) and the solution lies there as well", Alam told reporters after the visit.

He also pointed out that other risks included safe water supply systems, which if collapsed could put hundreds of thousands of refugees in jeopardy of waterborne diseases. They carried placards, some of which read "We want justice".

"The lack of a U.N. Security Council resolution has left the Myanmar government convinced that it has literally gotten away with mass murder", Kenneth Roth, the rights watchdog's executive director, told reporters in Yangon on Friday as he called on the United Nations to refer the Rohingya crisis the International Criminal Court.

While UN reports have already condemned the violence as both ethnic cleansing and having "all the hallmarks of genocide", this is the first visit by the security council and holds great significance.

The delegation from the five permanent Security Council member states and 10 non-permanent member states is then to travel to Myanmar to meet with civilian leader and Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

Today's visit was planned by Myanmar's government to begin repairing relations with the global community and will be used as an opportunity to consider taking further action.

Hundreds of thousands of registered Rohingya refugees now live in the Cox's Bazar district in southeastern Bangladesh after fleeing a Burmese military campaign of rape, murder and arson that the United Nations has called a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing".
