Teenagers elsewhere in the world needn't fret: the app is said to be keeping its age limit at 13 outside the EU.

It's not yet clear how WhatsApp will verify a user's age, but we imagine it will probably be reliant on honesty.

Additionally, the companies are also required to notify users about all types of data collection and data sharing with third-parties. But with new European Union data privacy laws coming into effect this May, you'll now have to have reached your sweet 16 to use it.

"If you live in a country in the European region, you must be at least 16 years old to use our services", WhatsApp said on its website.

The reminders that the user has control over data is something that most companies are quick to point out, including Twitter.

Popular instant messaging app WhatsApp is changing it norms and now the users have to be at least 13 years old to create a WhatsApp account.

It is asking them to nominate a parent or guardian to give permission for them to share information on the platform, otherwise they will not see a fully personalised version of the social media platform.

One of the biggest new developments in Europe this May is the General Data Protections Regulations (GDPR) system that's going into effect May 25.

It also features regulations to protect young people's information when using online services. Various other changes were announced by the company, many of which may cause some consternation with developers.

There will be questions specifically seeking consent for facial recognition technology, which Facebook for years has employed to identify people in photos uploaded to the platform.

Data sharing: We are not now sharing account information to improve your product and ads experience on Facebook. "Most importantly, you should have meaningful control over both", he added.

Now, the reason this may be of some interest to local users is that The Protection Of Personal Information Act (POPI) will bring South Africa in line with global standards for the collection, recording, and storage of personal information - including the GDPR. It's unclear how Facebook plans to do this seeing as it claims that user messages are encrypted, there's not really any other information they could glean to make ads more appropriate for users.
