Noura Hussein says her father made her contractually marry her cousin when she was 16, but she refused to accept the union and sought refuge with a relative for three years. When she refused to consumate the marriage, her husband invited two of his brothers and a male cousin to help him rape her, the rights group said. A change.org petition has also got thousands of signatures.

He said when Hussein reached out to her family for support, they handed her over to the police and reported the incident to them. Forced child marriage and marital rape are not considered crimes in Sudan. Another member of her legal team Muawya Khidir said that she was only defending herself when she killed the man and was mentally and psychologically disturbed as a result of rape, The Guardian reported. But her father tricked her into coming back home three years later and sent her to her husband.

"The Sudanese authorities must quash this grossly unfair sentence and ensure that Noura gets a fair retrial that takes into account her mitigating circumstances". SEEMA has been campaigning in support of Hussein.

Rights group Amnesty International on Thursday slammed a Sudanese court's sentencing of a teenager to death for killing her rapist husband in self-defence.

Because Noura was a victim of rape, many are calling for her release, and for her not to be punished at all.

Cases like Hussein's don't come to light often in Sudan, Salah said, because most young women who experience sexual abuse in marriage "don't raise their voices or say anything because of the social pressure or the social stigma".

"The case of Noura is different".

Sudan is marked 165 out of 188 in the United Nations Development Programme's Gender Development Index, which quantifies gender inequality using income levels, political representation, reproductive health, maternal mortality rates and other measures. "The death penalty is the ultimate cruel, inhuman, and degrading punishment, and to apply it to a rape victim only highlights the failure of the Sudanese authorities to acknowledge the violence she endured". The man's family Nury requires that the death sentence was carried out.
