  • Militant shot dead in attack on police HQ in Indonesia's Riau province

Four of the men involved in the attack on the Riau Police headquarters in Pekanbaru on Wednesday had previously tried to help terror detainees who were rioting at the Mobile Brigade headquarters (Mako Brimob) last week, police said.

In addition to the two injured cops, one police officer killed after getting hit by suspected terrorists' vehicle, one journalist injured, four perpetrators killed while at least one is on the run.

Media said one attacker may have had a bomb strapped to his body but police did not immediately confirm the reports.

This footage shows the police station from the view of a passing driver.

The "Islamic State" (IS) group, which is supported by as many as 30 Indonesian militant groups, quickly claimed responsibility for Wednesday's assault through its Amaq news agency.

Police suspect they were carried out by a cell of the Islamic State-inspired group Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), an umbrella organisation on a US State Department terrorist list that has allegedly drawn hundreds of Indonesian sympathisers of Islamic State.

The attack comes after a series of suicide bombings by Islamist militants targeting churches and a police building in Indonesia's second-biggest of city of Surabaya over the past few days.

Local police initially said they had killed three people and wounded another.

The bombing followed separate attacks on three churches, also carried out by one family, in the same city.

While the police managed to shoot four of the attackers, the remaining five escaped said the police chief of Riau.

The incident took place at around 9am, when a white MPV crashed into the gate of the police headquarters.

The church bombing family were in the same religious study group as the two other families linked to the attacks, police said.
