Florida and MS declare states of emergency ahead of Subtropical Storm Alberto

The storm has been rather disorganized for most of its life over water (thus the "subtropical" classification), but has recently become more tropical in nature.

Alberto was expected to drop as much as 12 inches (30 cm) of rain, slamming an area from MS to western Georgia, the Miami-based hurricane center said.

Bay County emergency management officials held a news briefing Sunday, and said that due to tides and when the storm is expected to hit, any surge isn't a major concern. These remnants will bring tropical rains and possible flooding to some areas, so we will have to keep a close eye on that threat and where it lines up.

In Gulf Shores, Ala., webcams showed beaches starting to fill up as the storm's track shifted slightly east away from the region, but red flags on the beach warned beachgoers to stay out of the rough water.

A storm surge watch remains in effect for much of northern Florida, from the Suwannee to Navarre in the Panhandle. A subtropical storm like Alberto has a less defined and cooler center than a tropical storm, and its strongest winds are found farther from its center.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Subtropical Storm Alberto gained the early jump on the 2018 hurricane season as it headed toward anticipated landfall sometime Monday on the northern Gulf Coast, where white sandy beaches emptied of their usual Memorial Day crowds.

After that, it will bring powerful winds and heavy rains as it moves into the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday, the hurricane center said.

In Taylor County, there were voluntary evacuations for those in coastal zones and beach communities, mobile homes, RV parks and low-lying areas.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott issued a declaration for all 67 counties in his state.

On Sunday morning, the storm was located about 240 kilometres northwest of the Dry Tortugas, which is nearly 113 kilometres west of Key West, Florida, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC). Over the few days, localized flash flooding from heavy rain is the main threat across the Southeastern U.S. The tropical storm watch along the north-central Gulf Coast has been discontinued. "It has maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, which is about 10 miles shy of being a hurricane".

The downpours could dampen Memorial Day, the unofficial start of the summer tourist season along Gulf beaches.

The first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season that starts Friday prompted Florida, Alabama and MS to launch emergency preparations Saturday.

The storm was about 120 miles (190 kms) south of Apalachicola, Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico coast as of 4pm on Sunday (local time) and was expected to make landfall along the Florida Panhandle on Monday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

For us, the workweek is rather quiet with the best chance of storms not popping up until Friday afternoon. Meteorologists are calling it a "subtropical storm", not to be confused with the just plain tropical storms we know and dread.
