  • US officials are in Panmunjom village at the demilitarised zone for discussions on a possible Kim Trump summit

Last week United States president Donald Trump pulled the USA from the summit, telling Kim Jong-un in a long-winded and at times freaky letter North Korea as displayed "tremendous anger and open hostility".

South Korean President Moon Jae-in shakes hands with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during their summit at the truce village of Panmunjom, North Korea, May 26, 2018. "[Moon] could join President Trump and Kim in Singapore", a senior official told Yonhap.

US officials have talked about a comprehensive one-shot deal in which North Korea eliminates its nukes first and receives rewards later.

On Monday, veteran American diplomat Sung Kim led an American delegation to Panmunjom at the demilitarised zone (DMZ) for talks with North Korean officials.

White House deputy chief of staff Joe Hagin and others from the Trump administration flew Sunday to Singapore, the planned site for the summit. Kim Young Chol, the Vice Chairman of North Korea, heading now to NY.

Howard X also made an appearance as Kim at the Winter Olympics in Gangneung in South Korea in February, bewildering North Korean cheerleaders who initially thought their leader had walked into a hockey stadium. It is unclear to what degree the two sides are willing to compromise.

The American delegation there is led by Mr Sung Kim, a veteran of previous nuclear negotiations with North Korea and now the U.S. ambassador to the Philippines.

Before the Trump-Kim meeting, the USA president also plans to hold face-to-face discussions with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Delegations from the United States and North Korea arrived in Singapore on Monday evening, according to the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

Soon after this appointment, however, he was reportedly sent for "ideological re-education" as punishment for an "overbearing attitude", according to South Korean daily JoongAng Ilbo.

In the wake of Mr Trump's change of mind over the weekend, meetings are expected to take place today in North Korea and Singapore, the intended venue for the summit which had been scheduled for 12 June.

The impersonator said Kim's rise as the third leader of North Korea in 2011 has proved lucrative for him, jump starting a new career in films, commercials and private functions, most often in his home town of Hong Kong. "They plan to have additional meetings this week", Sanders said.

But analysts believe North Korea will be unwilling to cede its nuclear deterrent unless it is given security guarantees that the U.S. won't try to topple the regime.

The Korea Herald yesterday quoted a top South Korean official as saying that this would be the crux in any deal.

Much of the communication between the United States and North Korea has happened via their intelligence network, especially as Mike Pompeo's first visit to Pyongyang at the beginning of April was while he was still director of the Central Intelligence Agency and secretary of state nominee.

The State Department said a separate team of White House officials has headed to Singapore to sort out logistics.

In their second meeting in a month, Moon said Kim Jong Un expressed a willingness to cooperate to end confrontation and work toward peace for the sake of a successful summit with Trump.

He "will be authorized to speak on behalf of Kim Jong Un, and his intricate knowledge of the various policy issues at play means that US officials will regard what he says as a bellwether for the DPRK's intentions at the summit".

He has also faced criticism for his alleged role in a series of North Korean provocations, including the 2010 sinking of the South Korean Navy corvette the Cheonan, which killed 46 sailors.

The U.S. has called for "complete, verifiable and irreversible" dismantling of Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal.

Upon returning from Pyongyang in March, Seoul's National Security Office chief Chung Eui-yong had claimed that Kim had an "understanding position" on the joint drills.

He and Kim Jong-un's sister were the only North Korean officials to attend the first inter-Korean summit in April.
