Gina Haspel Now Says CIA Shouldn't Have Conducted Its Interrogation Program

Thailand found itself at the centre of a confirmation hearing for Gina Haspel as the new director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), which has dominated United States media and talk shows for weeks.

A committee vote on Haspel is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

The Justice Department has provided to the Intelligence Committee the executive summary of a classified report by Durham laying out his factual findings and legal analysis, and several senators of both parties have asked the department to make that available to the full Senate as well.

Amid criticism of Gina Haspel for her role in the Central Intelligence Agency's enhanced interrogation techniques like waterboarding, one green beret chose to argue that waterboarding wasn't actually torture. "I also respect my colleagues who have made a different decision", Warner said in a statement on Tuesday, acknowledging that his endorsement was a "difficult decision" and citing "valid questions" raised throughout the process about Haspel's history. "While I won't condemn those that made these hard calls, and I have noted the valuable intelligence collected, the program ultimately did damage to our officers and our standing in the world", she wrote. In the letter first reported by CNN and obtained by CBS News, Haspel told Warner the program, "did damage to our officers and our standing" and, "is not one the Central Intelligence Agency should have undertaken".

That went much further than Haspel had gone last week at her public confirmation hearing.

McCain's comments sparked a fresh debate over now-banned torture techniques ahead of Senate voting.

Haspel's written responses also briefly addressed other important issues that did not come up at her hearing. Joe Manchin III, West Virginia and Joe Donnelly, Indiana, have pledged support.

While most Senate Democrats, including Intelligence Committee veterans like Dianne Feinstein, have announced their opposition to Haspel's nomination, their pretensions to oppose torture and demand a higher moral standard in the CIA leadership are belied by their own records. It was President Obama who decided that John Brennan, Jose Rodriguez, Gina Haspel and others involved in the torture program should not face prosecution.

"If I can change one person's mind about what torture is and what I would do to protect American freedom, I will do this for years", he said. A committee vote is expected Wednesday.
