#Impeachment Trends on Italian Twitter over Anti-Populist ‘Coup’

Italy's President Sergio Mattarella on Monday asked Carlo Cottarelli to try and form a government after an attempt to form a populist coalition failed.

The President sparked another political crisis in Rome when he refused to accept Conte's nomination for economy minister, 81-year-old Eurosceptic Paulo Savano.

President Mattarella pulled the plug on 5Star-League government after rejecting the candidacy of the Euroskeptic Paolo Savona as economy minister.

Mattarella vetoed their choice for economy minister Sunday night.

The League and 5-Star, which had spent days drawing up a coalition pact aimed at ending a stalemate following an inconclusive March vote, responded with fury to Mattarella, accusing him of abusing his office.

The prospect of Italy's government going on a spending spree on promised tax cuts and welfare benefits roiled markets last week. "Then parliament would be dissolved with elections at the beginning of 2019", Cottarelli said shortly after being named interim prime minister. Tomorrow we want to know the date of the election", Salvini said on Sunday during a live stream on his Facebook page. The Lega leader added that Italy became a "French or German colony.

The populist Five Star Movement and the right-wing Northern League had agreed to form a government based on their common anti-establishment stance, in spite of major political differences.

Michael Roth told reporters in Brussels that Italy, a founding member of the European Union, has always been a reliable and integration-friendly partner.

The decision led to prime minister-elect Giuseppe Conte stepping aside, exacerbating the political turmoil almost three months after March's inconclusive general election.

Luigi Di Maio, Italy's 5-star leader said Mr Mattarella's rejection of Mr Savona as economy minister was "unacceptable". He added that the League and 5-Star had refused to put forward any other name for the role.

A technical government will still be subject to votes of confidence in both houses of Parliament, and the Five Star Movement and League made clear Mr Cottarelli would not have their support.

Italy's premier-designate has told the president he has been unable to form what would have been western Europe's first populist government.

More likely than an actual impeachment, however, the new populist platform will nearly certainly be modified to include a reworking of presidential powers to impede the holder of the office-who is not directly elected by citizens-from contravening the democratically expressed will of the people.

"However, it is far from certain that Mattarella's current move will end Italy's drama".

It is on this basis that Di Maio has raised the possibility of impeaching Mattarella for treason - something that would require an absolute majority in both chambers of parliament in a joint session.

While a technocratic government would likely be approved by the centre-left Democratic Party and Forza Italia -the party run by former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi - those two parties alone don't have enough votes.
