  • TV Producer Dies After E-Cigarette Explodes, Lodges in His Skull

The autopsy also found that the vaping machine had created a wound on D'Elia's head which had managed to fire through his skull and into his brain, ABC reports.

A few days after D'Elia's tragic death, an eighteen (18) year old in MI suffered severe burns when e-cigarette batteries he was carrying in his pocket exploded.

According to FEMA, the 38-year-old's death is the first in the U.S. to be caused by an e-cigarette.

The owner of Lizard Juice, an e-cigarette retailer in Florida, said he does not think such vaping pens are "safe enough".

FEMA records indicate D'Elia's was the first death in the United States to be caused by e-cigarettes.

E-cigarettes prove to be quite unsafe, despite advertising. Similar incidents have occurred in the past, resulting in serious injuries.

Kiklas said there are two steps e-cigarette users can take to avoid the risk of an explosion. "Lithium-ion batteries fail in other devices as well, but in a laptop, it's on your lap".

A representative from Smok-E Mountain said that the problem was most likely a battery issue, or a problem with the atomizer D'Elia had in his mouth. No concrete information has been released yet on the actual cause of the device's explosion. The mod pen was manufactured in the Philippines.

However, manufacturers may soon feel the pressure to upgrade their products' safety as lawsuits pile up. According to FEMA, this is the first e-cigarette death in the US.

However, until their safety is guaranteed, smokers reaching for e-cigarettes may want to follow the guidelines set by government bodies.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's recommendations for e-cigarette use include: not carrying loose e-cig batteries in a pocket, where they could come into contact with other metal objects; not charging with a phone charger; not charging while unattended; and not mixing and matching different brands or old and new batteries.
