Having been blown away by rivals Manchester City, who are 19 points ahead of the chasing pack, United moved four clear of third-placed Tottenham with one game remaining to seal the merest of consolations.

It was a game befitting a contest nearing the end of the season though Luke Shaw did hit the post in the first stanza for United.

"I saw there was a bit going on but the game had not been that type of game all night, there was a wee bit that came out of nowhere really but I wouldn't make anything of it".

There was a more subdued atmosphere from the home fans at the end of another deeply frustrating campaign for the Hammers.

The result, however, was enough for United to guarantee their highest league finish since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Jose Mourinho has insisted he did not drop Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial from his team against West Ham as punishment for their performance against Brighton and revealed they will both be recalled this weekend.

However, that failed to provoke an immediate response as West Ham posed the early threat.

Marko Arnautovic almost opened the scoring for the Hammers in the sixth minute with a low strike that forced goalkeeper David De Gea into a good save. He made a decision to ring the changes and Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard, Scott McTominay, Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw all started the game.

West Ham dangerman Marko Arnautovic carried the fight to the visitors, but the half ended with Adrian again thwarting Mourinho's men as he repelled another Sanchez attempt.

A lacklustre United display was reflected in Pogba again failing to take control of the game.

Pogba then sent an audacious effort from the halfway line well over Adrian's crossbar to sum up United's lack of ideas in attacking areas. The Frenchman headed wide after neat wing-play by Valencia, thrashed an audacious 40-yarder off target and was unlucky with a bending drive, following tenacious play by Alexis.

The game seemed to be petering out before a flare up between the sides as Pogba's foul on West Ham skipper Mark Noble led to a fracas.
