  • Pompeo returning from North Korea with three US detainees: Trump

Mr Trump added: "Secretary Pompeo and his "guests" will be landing at Andrews Air Force Base at 2:00 A.M.in the morning".

"We are very grateful for the release of our husband and father, Tony Kim, and the other two American detainees", the family wrote.

Trump had said Tuesday that Pompeo had again traveled to North Korea to meet with Kim about details for the planned meeting, which included release of the USA prisoners. But he did not disclose any additional details about it.

Pompeo's visit came with rumours flying over three USA citizens being held in the North, fuelled by South Korea where the president's office said they expected the men to be freed.

According to media reports, Kim Dong Chul was a South Korea-born USA citizen and former Virginia resident.

Trump and Kim plan to meet either this month or next in a location that has yet to be determined. Trump is hoping to now make headway against North Korea's nuclear weapons program. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison with hard labor in 2016 after being found guilty of espionage charges.

He did not mention that two of the Americans had been detained after he became President.

South Korean officials have also been involved involved in the talks about the Kim meeting.

One of the Americans is Tony Kim, also known as Kim Sang-duk, a teacher who was detained in April 2017.

Kim Hak Song was detained in May 2017 for what North Korean state media described as "hostile acts" against the country.

"I give the president lots of credit for bringing him to the table", DeTrani says, adding that Kim may be feeling both confident and risk-tolerant because he feels he has a deployable nuclear deterrent and that President Trump is pursuing a novel kind of diplomacy.

Talk of the captives' release had increased as the USA and North Korea's regime engaged in rare talks - and worked to arrange a meeting between Trump and Kim Jong Un.

The three detainees had all been treated as "prisoners of war" and have not been seen since June, when a State Department official was allowed a brief visit with them while collecting Otto Warmbier, the detained college student who fell into a coma in North Korea and died shortly after his return to the United States.

South Korea hailed the release of the three US prisoners as a development that would have a "positive effect" on the upcoming summit between Kim and Trump - and also called for the release of six South Korean prisoners to "reinforce reconciliation" efforts.

The pact, a decade in the making, also provides for regular meetings between defense officials and a mechanism for their naval vessels to communicate at sea to avert maritime incidents. "Also, good meeting with Kim Jong Un".

Analysts have also said that, over the years, North Korea has demanded the withdrawal of US troops from South Korea and the eliminating of the nuclear defense umbrella that covers the Korean Peninsula.

Pompeo secretly met with Kim in April while he was still director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

According to the White House statement, at the direction of Trump, "Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other representatives of the United States government traveled to Pyongyang" on May 9 to prepare for Trump's upcoming meeting with DPRK top leader Kim Jong Un.

"There are many challenges along the way".

The relationship between North Korea and China had been noticeably cold since Kim came to power, as the North's weapons testing became increasingly frequent over the past few years.

Last Thursday, Trump hinted at the possibility of the release of the hostages, who were detained in North Korea.

Japanese Foreign Ministry officials said they want to improve Japan's strained relations with China, with the eventual goal of realizing a visit by Xi.
