Pakistan 268-6 against Ireland at 2nd day close

  • Umpires Illingworth and Llong carry out an inspection but there was little prospect of play and Ireland will hope to make their bow today instead

Ireland's long-awaited delay of positioning itself in the same bracket as rest of the Test nations was marred by rains on Friday as their debut in the longest format of the game against Pakistan was halted without the captains even walking out for a toss. First, it was Shadab who played the aggressor and then Faheem to help Pakistan revive.

They added 75 runs in 17 overs after tea, and rode some luck. Babar Azam had hit three nice boundaries in his 14 as Pakistan went past 100 before Murtagh moved one away and caught the edge through to his Middlesex team-mate Stirling at second slip. When Stirling did come on, a well-set Faheem launched the part-time spinner over long-on for six. He was 61 not out off 69 balls. He reached his first half-century after tea, also, and he was 52 off 91 balls.

Deutrom revealed the capacity for the match is 6,300 - it will be 8,500 for the T20s against India next month with further temporary stands erected.

Rankin, who had taken one wicket in his lone Test appearance for England against Australia at Sydney in 2014 before switching allegiance, had the honor of claiming Ireland's maiden scalp at this level, when an uncertain Azhar (4) edged to Porterfield at second slip.

And off the next ball, Murtagh trapped Imam-ul-Haq with an inswinger.

Murtagh got the full treatment from his team-mates and there was nearly a third wicket next ball, but Stuart Thompson was wide of the stumps where a direct hit would have seen the end of Haris Sohail, who was well out of his crease backing up.

Shafiq went on to complete a 107-ball fifty when he pulled Rankin for a single.

But their figures then took a thrashing from Ashraf and Khan.

More than 5,000 spectators had paid to watch the historic day's play against Pakistan at Malahide but are now entitled to a full refund and, following the abandonment of Ireland's last home match against West Indies at Stormont, the compensation is not covered by CI's insurance. But in the process, opening partner Iman was injured. Non-striker Imam-ul-Haq, like Faheem making his Test debut, found himself sandwiched between wicket-keeper Niall O'Brien and Kane in a heavy collision as he scrambled to complete the run.

Ireland and Afghanistan were accorded Test status by the International Cricket Council a year ago after they had applied to the ICC to upgrade their status from Associates.
