  • North Korea's last nuclear test triggered an earthquake

Asked about his recent talks in Pyongyang with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Pompeo said they had substantive conversations that involve deep complex problems, like if Kim is prepared to FULLY denuclearize.

North Korea said journalists from other countries, including the United States, South Korea, China, Russia and Britain, will be invited to cover the event, to "show in a transparent manner the dismantlement of the northern nuclear test ground to be carried out".

The United States and North Korea are technically still at war - a stop-gap armistice ended the brutal three-year Korean war in 1953 and around 30,000 American troops remain in neighboring South Korea, which the USA supported in the conflict.

But Libya's program was not almost as advanced as North Korea and the country had not already stockpiled weapons.

That day saw North Korea's sixth and largest nuclear test to date.

Kim had already revealed plans to shut down the test site by the end of May during his summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in last month.

The summit will be the first meeting ever between a sitting United States president and the leader of North Korea.

As the three men walked down the steps of the plane flashing the "V" for victory sign, they appeared to be in good health - a far cry from the comatose state of 22-year-old U.Va. student Otto Warmbier upon his release from a North Korean prison. Seoul's Unification Ministry has said it hopes to solve the abductees issue through future inter-Korean talks and global efforts, but has not announced specific plans.

But Heo Gang-il, the manager of the North Korean restaurant in Ningbo where they worked, said he had lied about their final destination and blackmailed them into following him to the South.

"I remain concerned by reports that the foreign detainees have not received due legal process and may be held in inhumane conditions without consular access", he said. For its part, North Korea wants the lifting of sanctions and for the U.S.to withdraw the 28,500 troops it has stationed in South Korea.

A joint declaration by the two Koreas released following the summit saw Pyongyang and Seoul commit to, among other things, "the common goal" of a nuclear-free peninsula through "complete denuclearization". Skepticism remains as to North Korea's intentions.

Seismic waves from a nuclear test in North Korea.

The new scenario differs from two reports last week, one of which has been accepted for publication in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, that pinpointed the blast almost a kilometer to the northwest of the site identified in the new paper, and concluded that the blast rendered the entire mountain unfit for future nuclear tests.

In North Korea's bombastic rhetoric, "denuclearization" has, for years, been a byword for U.S. troop withdrawals from South Korea.
