  • Qualcomm talks new smartwatch chip

Kedia said that not only is a new lead watch arriving this fall, but so is a new wearable chipset from Qualcomm that has been built from the "ground up".

So there's hope for Wear OS users to get a core hardware platform that modernises their next smartwatch purchase.

According to Pankaj Kedia, Qualcomm's senior director of wearables, Qualcomm will unveil its new chipset alongside a new flagship/lead smartwatch in Spring (Australian time) and by the Christmas holidays the chipset will be on the market in several manufacturer's smartwatches.

Kedia confirmed some of the key features of the new platform as well as the fact it's the first objective built chips for Wear OS smartwatches. The new chip is created to be smaller (as you would expect considering the 2100 used a 28nm build process) resulting in smaller smartwatches and provide a full fitness experience, all while making the battery last longer. The 2100 came built on a 28nm process, which was oddly outdated at the time, but Kedia said that we can expect something more front-line on the next platform.

We don't yet know the new of Qualcomm's new platform or many specifics about what it will offer, but it seems the company will officially be unveiling it in the coming months.

A change in chip architecture and design could result in the next Snapdragon Wear paving the way for more battery-efficient smartwatches with more interesting or practical designs that boost the appeal of Wear OS devices without compromising on their connectivity or potential processing power. "When you look at the watch today it's very good when we're interacting with it, but when you're not it's not as good", said Kedia. Battery life is also expected to be improved by a substantial margin. It cannot be static when I'm not looking at it; it cannot be black and white when I'm not looking at it, it can.

Battery life will see a "significant" boost and there will be better health features, like longer heart rate monitoring.
