Three killed in another Indonesia bomb explosion

  • A Surabaya police office is the latest target in a series of bombings in Surabaya and neighbouring Sidoarjo

The eight-year-old daughter who survived did not have explosives strapped to her, but was thrown three m (10 ft) into the air by the blast and was receiving intensive care in hospital, police said. I think the police and other security officers are extremely alert in response to what has happened.

Indonesia's deadliest terrorist attack occurred in 2002, when bombs exploded on the tourist island of Bali, killing 202 people in one night, mostly foreigners.

Police said they killed four suspected members of JAD in Cianjur, West Java Province, and arrested two others, the BBC reported.

The family fanned out on Sunday with suicide bombs attached to themselves and their children, attacking three churches.

Such groups, which are loyal to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, as well as returnees from ISIS territories in the Middle East, pose a growing new threat in Indonesia, said Mr Evan Laksmana, a senior researcher at the Jakarta-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies.

Police ordered the temporary closure of all churches in Surabaya on Sunday, and a large food festival in the city was cancelled.

Democratic Party deputy secretary-general Rachland Nashidik said that while it was important to revise the Terrorism Law, the President should "pay attention to organizational reform and replace officials who have failed in carrying out their duties to protect the freedom and security of citizens".

All told, 25 people have died since Sunday including a total of 13 militants and their children.

The use of children in the attacks has been particularly horrifying to people.

And if the initial analysis by the police that the Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) is behind the recent attacks is accurate, then the local terrorist network has truly raised its game.

A security camera video of the attack on Surabaya's police headquarters showed at least one explosion after the four attackers rode two motorcycles up to a security checkpoint. Its leaders were killed in police raids and hundreds of militants were arrested.

"Don't hesitate to demand they step down from their positions to give a chance to those who are more reliable", said Rachland. The incidents left 18 people killed including the family of six. Their seven-year-old daughter survived the attack. Meanwhile, police were also able to recover a few more homemade bombs around the church's vicinity, which the bomb squad properly detonated and disposed of.
