Trump Declares Disaster for Hawaii Eruption

  • The Ecuadorian volcano Tungurahua spews lava and ash in Cahuaji about 80 miles south of Quito in February 2016. Authorities raised the alert level from yellow to orange after the volcano increased its activity and projected a column of ash 3 miles high

The Kilauea Volcano, which began erupting more than a week ago, has destroyed at least 36 structures so far including 27 homes, according to CBS News.

The lava emission appears to have paused since Wednesday but scientists are warning residents of acid rain, falling ash, and eruptions that could occur Friday and in coming weeks.

Some residents of Hawaii's Big Island have been forced into evacuation shelters, left to figure out what to do about their lost belongings.

She says that's why the lava has been cool and has been moving a little sluggishly.

Rachel Smigelski-Theiss is among those who have shifted gears.

"We know the volcano is capable of doing this", Mandeville said, citing similar explosions at Kilauea in 1925, 1790 and four other times in the last few thousand years.

Volcanologists believe these explosions happen when a lava lake - a large volume of molten lava often contained in a crater or volcanic vent - drops and groundwater is able to seep into the resulting shaft, or lava tube.

As long as people stay away, they will be safe, Johnson said, noting that residents are likely well aware of the potential dangers while tourists may be less so.

Geologists are warning of a possible explosion which would be the largest explosion in almost 120 years, CBS News reports.

The Hawaii volcano could blow its top in the coming days and cause a widespread disaster on the island, according to the latest from U.S. officials.

Neal said a chemical analysis of the lava that's erupted since last week indicated it's from magma that had been stored in the ground since a 1955 eruption.

The CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, the agency that markets Hawaii to the world, said Kilauea is being monitored around the clock to provide the public with the best information. Szigeti noted that the Big Island is "immense" and there are large parts of the island unaffected by the volcano. "We know it is a distinct possibility".

David Ige says President Donald Trump has approved his request for a presidential disaster declaration for the Big Island as the state copes with Kilauea volcano's eruption. But he also tells Reuters that there's not too much cause for alarm for most people.

"Federal funding is available to the state and to eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the fix or replacement of facilities damaged by Kilauea volcanic eruption and earthquakes in Hawaii County", the government said in a statement late Friday.
