  • Trump Greets 3 Americans Freed by North Korea

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, left, meets North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, right, Wednesday in Pyongyang, North Korea.

"I want to thank Kim Jong Un", Trump said on the tarmac.

Kim Yong Chol, a vice chairman of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party, reportedly welcomed the former Central Intelligence Agency director graciously, reminding him of the country's nuclear capabilities but asserting that Pyongyang had "high expectations the US will play a very big role in establishing peace on the Korean Peninsula", according to a number of media outlets at the scene, including The New York Times.

But it's an enormous risk for a president who has shown a knack for walking away from deals like the Paris climate accord and the Iran nuclear agreement but little acumen at putting new ones together. The release was praised by the White House as a "gesture of goodwill" and appeared to signal an effort by Kim to set a more favourable mood for the summit.

But both Kang and Pompeo insisted that they agreed on the need for the "total, complete, permanent and verifiable" denuclearization of the divided peninsula. Therefore, she said, any change in the size of the United States forces in the South Korea should not be on the table at the summit. "There's got to be real preparation and strategy".

Pompeo said he had "good, substantive" conversations with Kim in Pyongyang in what was his second meeting with the North Korea leader in less that six weeks, and believed both sides understood the ultimate goal of the summit.

"We very much hope to see further steps, more concrete steps toward denuclearization at the U.S".

Quoting a South Korean diplomat, the newspaper said North Korea's sincerity about dismantlement is being tested. And President Trump going there would play into North Korea's propaganda machine - that the American President is coming to us. It can be said that Trump's decision to choose a third-party country by attaching importance to neutrality was wise.

Next month's summit will be complicated - and the risks particularly great - because Trump is upending decades of diplomatic practice.

Shuang has said that China welcomes the positive progress made by the leaders of the DPRK and the USA to prepare for the summit. The discussion of whether the troops should leave or not is advised to take place only between the president of South Korea and Trump.

A prosperous city state, Singapore has already hosted a historic meeting between two leaders burdened with a legacy of bad blood and mutual distrust.

But those details are daunting, to say the least.

"We'll require a robust verification program, one that we would undertake with partners around the world which would achieve that outcome", he warned. North Korean officials accused the two of anti-state activities and trying to overthrow the government. Those that have, such as Mark Lambert, the director for Korea policy at the State Department, were excluded from Pompeo's secret trip to Pyongyang this week.

A series of United States administrations have sent envoys, both official and unofficial, to Pyongyang in the hope of stopping North Korea's provocative nuclear weapons program.

Abe is expected to ask Trump to push North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to address the long-standing issue of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korean agents in the 1970s and 1980s, the sources said.
