  • Kim Jong-un committed to complete denuclearisation, says Moon Jae-in after North-South 'surprise' summit

Nauert's statement confirms these intentions: "We continue to prepare for a meeting between the President and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un", she says.

DPRK's First Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan responded then that his country is ready to sit down with the United States anytime in any manner for talks to solve the problems existing between them.

On Sunday, Trump tweeted that a US team had arrived in the North to make arrangements for the summit.

"Solid response to my letter, thank you!" tweeted Trump. The 30-member team is reportedly led by White House deputy chief of staff Joe Hagin and special assistant to the president Patrick Clifton.

He also accompanied Kim Jong Un on both of his recent trips to China to meet President Xi Jinping, and held talks with Pompeo when he travelled to Pyongyang.

South Korea's Yonhap News said Tuesday it saw the name of Kim Yong Chol on the passengers' list for a flight Tuesday from Beijing to Washington.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency cited diplomatic sources as saying that Mr Kim was on an Air China flight to NY which departed on Wednesday afternoon. They later reported that Kim changed his flight to go to NY on Wednesday.

Abe stressed that the worldwide community should be united to solve North Korea's nuclear, missile and abduction issues.

In a flurry of diplomacy over recent days, Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in held a surprise meeting on Saturday at the border village of Panmunjom, during which they agreed the North Korea-US summit must be held. So we're looking at June 12th in Singapore - that hasn't changed and it's moving along pretty well.

Kim is technically under sanctions from both South Korea and the US, but both nations have been willing to waive those sanctions for the sake of diplomacy.

Both Pyongyang and Washington are pressing ahead on plans for a meeting between the two leaders after Trump pulled out of the scheduled Jun 12 summit on Thursday, only to reconsider the decision the next day.

Kim Yong Chol is to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Kim Yong Chol previously was chief of the Reconnaissance General Bureau, a top North Korean military intelligence agency, and has spent almost 30 years as a senior member of the intelligence community.

Mr Moon told reporters on Sunday that Mr Kim "again made clear his commitment to a complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula", and told the South Korean leader that he is willing to cooperate to end confrontation and work toward peace for the sake of the successful North Korea-US summit.

Mr Kim Yong Chol, vice-chairman of North Korea's Workers' Party's Central Committee, was scheduled to fly to the U.S. today after speaking to Chinese officials in Beijing, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said, citing a source.

Two weeks of hard-nosed negotiating, including a communications blackout by the North and a public cancellation by the U.S., appeared to be paying off as the two sides engaged in their most substantive talks to date about the meeting.

The government of South Korean President Moon Jae-in also may be seeking to meet with the US president and North Korean leader in Singapore.

Pentagon official Randall Schriver was also part of the US team, along with Allison Hooker, a Korea expert on the White House National Security Council, the USA official said.
