Waymo van involved in serious collision in Arizona

The Waymo van was reportedly hit by sedan after it swerved into the wrong lane in order to avoid another collision. It seems like the tech giants are struggling with the safe testing of the self-driving vehicles.

A photo from the scene posted on Twitter from a bystander, Matt Jaffee, shows a white Waymo minivan sitting near the curb with damage to the driver's door and front left side of the vehicle.

An autonomous auto being tested by Waymo was involved in a serious collision in the Phoenix, Arizona suburb of Chandler, when a vehicle being driven by a human swerved to avoid another vehicle, and left the human operator in the Waymo with minor injuries.

As reported by the police, an operator was present in the vehicle on the drivers' seat at the time of the crash although the auto was in autonomous mode.




In March, a woman, Elain Herzberg, was fatally hit by an Uber vehicle that was in autonomous mode in Tempe. The local police noted that there were minor injuries sustained from the incident. A Honda was eastbound on Chandler when it had to swerve to avoid a northbound vehicle in the intersection, police said. For now, it seems like the autonomous vehicle was not directly responsible for the crash.

A Waymo vehicle in autonomous mode was struck by another driver during what appeared to be a head-on collision in Chandler.
