Solo: A Star Wars Story could turn out to be the first flop in Star Wars history, as expectations for the opening weekend box office were far beyond what the film has actually taken ($83M or so in its three-day opening).

The Jedi Council crew have been covering Solo: A Star Wars Story since the film was announced, so you know Kristian and Ken are excited to finally able to discuss, dissect, and debate the actual film as opposed to trying to gleam insight from trailers, teasers, and clips.

That movie stars Ryan Reynolds as the foul-mouthed, irreverent title character as he forms an X-Force team to protect a young mutant from evil Cable (Josh Brolin). So what did Ron think of the movies disappointing opening weekend?

One potential issue for the movie was when it was released. Star Wars IX is slated to hit theaters in December 2019. (The film is expected to finish with $101 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend). The movie sold $14.1 million in Thursday preview ticket sales, which is a record for the Thursday before Memorial Day Weekend.

With this start and anticipated films like "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" and Disney's own "Incredibles 2" coming in June, "Solo" might not even have the legs to reach the $657.9 million that "Justice League" made globally.

Superheroes will also claim the No. 3 spot, as Disney and Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War adds about $16.5 million to its domestic haul in its fifth week. Compare that to The Last Jedi's multiplier being 2.1, Rogue One's being 2.18, and The Force Awakens being 2.08. The Force Awakens, Rogue One and The Last Jedi each pulled in less than 55% of their money from overseas. That figure represents a rather steep decline of 66 percent in its second frame, and brings its domestic total to $207.4 million after 10 days in theaters. Fans who watched The Clone Wars and Rebels animated series (both of which are canon according to Disney) will be familiar with Maul's continued legacy throughout the franchise. That is a lifetime ago on the scale of box office inflation.

That leaves Warner Bros.' "Life of the Party" at No. 5, with an estimate of $6.9 million from 2,937 locations for the four days.

And there's enough positive spin to work on Solo to make its performance look better to the masses, if not Disney's shareholders and anyone paying attention to the tracking promising a lot higher grosses.
