The national increases measured in a new report by the Centers for Disease Control varied between states, and Connecticut's increase was on the low end: it ranks 46th in rates of suicide deaths and 43rd in the rate of increased deaths since 1999.

Dr. Deborah Stone, the CDC's lead researcher, told the BBC that while there is no single factor that leads to suicide, relationship issues and financial troubles tend to be top contributory factors. And so that's one of the things that this study really shows us.

Extensive suicide prevention efforts have kept rates of suicide deaths relatively low in CT, but the numbers have still increased steadily since 1999, particularly among middle-aged people, state and federal statistics show. Nevada was the only state that saw no increase, and DE saw the smallest increase which was 5.9 percent.

According to the findings published in the CDC's "Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report", 54% of those who died by suicide in 2015 did not have a known mental health condition. Publicity surrounding a suicide has been repeatedly and definitively linked to a subsequent increase in suicide, especially among young people.

"None of this is surprising information, which is not to trivialize its importance".

For those who are contemplating suicide, Litovski says they try to connect them with resources like counselors, even hospitals if necessary.

Higher rates of substance abuse and drug addiction are also associated with higher suicide rates, Duarte said. Asking if they've had suicidal thoughts is not harmful and lets them know you care, she said. "The conversation about firearms and suicide doesn't have to be a debate about the Second Amendment". They don't want to get near it or around it because it's taboo, and it's not going to happen to me.

Dr. Christine Moutier is the Chief Medical Officer at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. "And there's good research to support that". They add that at present there are no funds from the government for suicide prevention program in adults. "We can't expect a major public health problem like this to be addressed unless we see the investment".

Learn the warning signs of suicide to identify and appropriately respond to people at risk. The United States has a total 25 percent increase, CNN reports.

"But our research shows something more alarming - these increases are occurring in places that have been struggling for many years: places where incomes have been stagnant and poverty rates have been high".

NELL GREENFIELDBOYCE, BYLINE: Every year, tens of thousands of Americans kill themselves. What impact might news coverage of a suicide have on other people's trying or committing suicide? Among people ages 15 to 34, suicide is the second leading cause of death.

If you are feeling one or more of thesymptoms or know someone who is, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or text "TN" to 741-741.

The CDC said the 27 states represent almost half the USA population but can not be considered nationally representative. Its suicide rate went up nearly 58 percent.

Suicide prevention efforts in Connecticut have increased in those years with the creation of the Connecticut Suicide Advisory Board in 2012, which merged suicide prevention efforts by the Department of Children and Families, the Department of Public Health and Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.

"Death by suicide is the ultimate Stage 4 event in the progression of many mental health conditions, whether or not they have ever been recognized and labeled". For insight on how to report on suicide: https://afsp.org/about-suicide/for-journalists/. It also talks about the need to reduce access to, quote, "lethal means". While suicide is more common in men than women, there has been a rise in female suicides. She's urging the media to be careful with what they say. Approximately half of such deaths involve the use of a firearm. And Mike Anestis says we can't tiptoe around the gun connection.

BOB GEBBIA: We need to make our families and communities much more knowledgeable about this.
