  • WASHINGTON DC- JUNE 28 Protesters march from Freedom Plaza to demonstrate against family detentions and to demand the end of criminalizing efforts of asylum seekers and immigrants

"I'm proud to have been arrested with them, to put myself in the camp of people who believe that the United States of America is better", Jayapal said in a Twitter video following her arrest.

She and other protesters were charged with unlawful demonstration, a charge that includes crowding or obstructing others in a public place. Logically, these people were also protesting the rule of law as well as strong border security - which is enforced to keep all Americans (including the protesters themselves) safe on an everyday basis.

The mass protest took place Thursday in the Hart Senate Office Building; with demonstrators calling for an end to "family separations" and demanding legislators abolish the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

The nationwide day of protest was originally created to protest President Donald Trump's policy of separating parents from their children as they awaited prosecution after crossing into the USA illegally.

Hundreds of women, wrapped in metallic silver blankets, referencing the duvets given to migrant children in detention centers, occupied the Senate office building in Washington DC after marching down the streets of the city chanting "Shame!"

And dozens of protesters shut down a government meeting in MI in protest against a contract with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agency to house detainees at a local jail.

"As a woman and as a mother, I refuse to stay silent as parents on the border are separated from their kids", said Tamika Mallory, co-chair of the Women's March, who was one of those arrested. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to stop separations, but the reunification process has proved to be complicated. "Do you?" painted in white writing on the back, a clear dig at first lady Melania Trump's trip to the southwest to visit detained children and the jacket she wore as she departed.

"The overall goal is to end family detentions", she told Breitbart, "to ultimately remove Trump and his enablers from office, however that happens in whatever time frame, and to lay the groundwork for a new set of policies in this country based on human decency and mutual respect".
