"Legislation is not the way to go here when it's so easy for the president to sign it".

"We have to get the Democrats to go ahead and work with us because as a result of Democrat-supported loopholes in our federal laws, most illegal immigrant families and minors from Central America who arrive unlawfully at the border can not be detained together or removed together - only released", he said.

Hammering home the need to combat smugglers who he said "game the system", Trump accused the media of helping human traffickers.

President Donald Trump announced today that he would be signing an executive order "to keep families together".

According to the US Government, over 2,300 children were separated from their parents at the US-Mexico border between May 5 and June 9.

Trump's "zero tolerance" policy refers illegal immigrants to criminal prosecution, separating parents and children into different areas of custody, as opposed to the Obama administration policy of referring families to civil deportation.

Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan said Wednesday the legislation will resolve multiple issues in dealing with the high flow of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers, including the practice of separating families.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said, "Anyone who has seen the photos, heard the audio of small children alone and afraid, crying out for their parents, can not help but feel horror and disgust".

Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kansas, one of 13 Senate Republicans who signed a letter urging Trump to end his administration's separation policy, was also waiting on the yet-unknown details.

Ms May said Wednesday night that images of children in cages were "deeply disturbing".

The order is titled "Affording Congress an Opportunity to Address Family Separation".

"We want to end the border crisis by finally giving us the legal authorities and the resources to detain and remove illegal immigrant families all together and bring them back to their country", he said.

Under previous U.S. administrations, immigrants caught crossing the border for the first time tended to be issued with court summonses and released. Debbie Wasserman Schultz slamming the administration after they were denied entry to a shelter in Homestead, Fla., that is housing more than 1,000 migrant teenagers.

Meanwhile in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio toured a facility in East Harlem that houses children separated from their parents.

Even some of the president's biggest Republican supporters said they disagree with his policy.

The comments come amid news that Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has been working on executive action that would end the separation process.

He added that his administration will continue to implement a stringent policy on irregular migration.
