Egypt v Uruguay Group A 15 June 2018

  • Mohamed Salah

Egypt named a starting lineup without striker Mohamed Salah for their World Cup opener against Uruguay on Friday, a day after coach Hector Cuper had said he was almost 100 percent certain to play.

The key to Egypt's campaign will be Mohamed Salah's fitness as he recovers from the shoulder injury he suffered during May's UEFA Champions League final.

It will come as some relief to Egypt with Salah being the star of their team, and to the player himself.

"I like the best players to play, I train with the best and I want the best players to play", said Muslera.

Egypt also face Saudi Arabia and hosts Russian Federation in Group A.

"It would be a much different discussion if they take a point and it's a 0-0 game, but when you give that late goal and you're still looking at Russia's 5-0 win against Saudi Arabia".

"Uruguay is a team that's always a threat on set pieces".

It's worrying signs for Egypt as they scored only one goal in the absence of Mo Salah. To cap off a shambolic display, the Barcelona striker dived in the injury time in what appeared to be a laughable act on the pitch to get referee's attention.

Just before then, Suarez could have given Uruguay the lead in the first half as he missed an absolute sitter after hitting the side net from close range.

Apart from a couple of weak shots from winger Mahmoud Trezeguet and lone striker Marwan Mohsen, Egypt failed to carve out openings but held firm at the back.

Having finished second in South American qualifying above the likes of Argentina and Colombia, Uruguay have gone under the radar somewhat in the build-up to this tournament and look a decent bet at 8/13.

Expected to dominate Group A, Uruguay made its first step toward the next round.

To have any hopes of advancing, Egypt needs to avoid a loss against Russian Federation on Tuesday (Wednesday NZT) and probably beat Saudi Arabia on June 25 in its final group game. With a victory, Uruguay could reach the next stage with a game in hand against host Russian Federation on June 25. In 1970, Uruguay also reached the semifinals. "In the history of football we have broken a spell (winning the opening game)", he added. And Cuper hinted on Thursday that it was the player who had the final say whether to play. His involvement in today's match is in question.
