Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter Friday morning.

Other countries hit by the U.S. tariffs have also retaliated, raising fears of a global trade war.

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 20 per cent tariff on all European Union-assembled cars coming into the United States, a month after the administration launched an investigation into whether auto imports pose a national security threat.

EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said this week that the 28-nation bloc was "left with no other choice" but to impose tariffs of its own after the "unilateral and unjustified decision of the USA".

It's worthing noting that, before Trump triggered a trade war, US exports to the European Union faced an average tariff of just 3 percent; America's domestic carmakers were already highly profitable; and most major foreign automakers operate large plants in the United States.

"The US is abusing the tariff methods and starting trade wars all around the world".

Brussels initially drew up the list of products in March when Trump first floated the idea of 25% tariffs on steel and 10% on aluminium.

The majority of USA goods targeted by the European Union, such as tobacco, Harley Davidson motorcycles, cranberries and peanut butter, will now carry a tariff of 25%.

The list also hits clothing along with bed linen and men's leather footwear, eye makeup and lipsticks, plus a host of steel products.

"We are left with no other choice", Malmstrom said in a statement. "We will do what we have to do to rebalance and safeguard the European Union".

"We've never seen anything like this", said Mary Lovely, a Syracuse University economist who studies worldwide trade - at least not since countries tried to wall themselves off from foreign competition during the Great Depression. "If we chose products such as Harley Davidson, peanut butter and bourbon, it's because there are alternatives on the market".

"We are already beginning to see some increased regulatory scrutiny against US companies operating in the market, whether it is increased Customs enforcement, local emissions inspections at our companies' factories or stricter enforcement of the advertising law", said Mr Jake Parker, vice-president of China operations for the US-China Business Council in Beijing.

"The parties that will be most impacted are U.S. companies", he said.

Even before Mr Trump's latest threat, some U.S. companies in China were feeling the pressure.

Cohn said he understand Trump's rationale, but added that restricting vehicles to ones made in the U.S.is not realistic.
