  • Plane carrying Saudi Arabia's World Cup team catches fire before landing safely in Rostov

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez refused to get carried away following his side's 1-0 win against Saudi Arabia which means they have qualified for the last 16 of the World Cup with a game still to play in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup.

Luis Suarez, who was guilty of a number of blown chances against the Pharaohs, was happy to sweep home at the goal mouth after a Carlos Sanchez cross from a corner sailed over Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais' attempted punch and found the Barcelona striker unmarked at the far post. Playing his 100th worldwide match for Uruguay, he scored his 52nd goal and became the first from his country to score in at three different World Cups.

Despite widespread concerns over Russia's quality ahead of the World Cup, the hosts dispatched Saudi Arabia easily on Thursday, running riot over a porous defence to secure a confidence-boosting win.

But Group A favourite Uruguay is still widely expected to clobber Saudi Arabia, the second-lowest World Cup team in the Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings at No. 67.

Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani failed to create many chances against Egypt and did not look threatening. "We knew we could play better and we showed a better side of ourselves". Jose Gimenez scored the victor for Uruguay in the 89th minute.

But their hard work was undone by some poor marking in the 23rd minute as Suarez became the first Uruguayan to score in three successive World Cup finals with the opening goal.

Saudi Arabia had lots of the ball but didn't press forward enough to hurt Uruguay and it was a fairly comfortable victory in the end.

Uruguay began the second period with greater objective, and Suarez went close to a second when al-Owais palmed clear his low free-kick.

After firing blanks in the opening game against Egypt, Suarez atoned for his unforgivable misses with a calmly taken goal on Wednesday.

Saudi Arabia's national team endured an engine malfunction on the flight to Rostov-on-Don.

What time does The FIFA World Cup 2018 Uruguay v/s Saudia Arabia match begin?

"We played at a much better level than in the Russian Federation game, and that is more our style of play, but we just did not have the right tools to break Uruguay down", said Saudi Arabia coach Juan Antonio Pizzi.
