Microsoft's acquisition of GitHub could be announced as soon as Monday (MSFT)

  • It’s official Microsoft has acquired Git Hub for $7.5 billion

An acquisition could potentially cost Microsoft more than $5 billion, CNBC reports.

Talks between Microsoft and GitHub have been going on for a number of years now, and a new report suggests that an acquisition is closer than ever.

GitHub is an online code repository which was formally founded in 2008 by Chris Wanstrath and Tom Preston-Werner.

Bloomberg is reporting that Microsoft has already reached an agreement to purchase the company.

Microsoft's spokespeople have declined to comment on the decision. According to the report, Microsoft and GitHub have entertained an acquisition in recent years, but the talks have recently turned more serious. GitHub was last valued at $2 billion in 2015. Microsoft CEO Nadella has been moving the company away from hesitations with open-source software development and investing more heavily in resources like GitHub.

GitHub is one of the most popular platforms in the software development world today. One closely watched aspect of this deal will be whether fierce competitors like Amazon Web Services and Google continue to store code on a Microsoft-owned property.

They can also use Gitlab, which quickly capitalized on developer angst Sunday with a live YouTube video explaining how to get up and running with its similar service, although less than 200 people were watching it when I joined about ten minutes after it got started. Within three quarters of 2016, GitHub lost over $66 million. Chief Business Officer Julio Avalos joined the company's board of directors and now serves as the day-to-day face and leadership of the company, Bloomberg noted. If Microsoft does acquire GitHub, it could be seen as a visible attempt to further integrate Linux and Windows and increase interoperability, as demonstrated by the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) compatibility layer found in Windows 10.
