North Korea's top three military officials have been replaced ahead of an historic summit between leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump, according to multiple reports.

"I am going to visit the DPRK [Democratic People's Republic of Korea] and meet HE [His Excellency] Kim Jong-un", North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) quoted Assad as saying.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha spoke on the phone Monday with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, . just three days after their previous discussion last Friday.

The U.S. and North Korea "are believed to have settled on the Capella Hotel" on the resort island of Sentosa for their meetings, the Washington Post said on Sunday quoting sources.

Speaking about the upcoming meeting in Singapore, Mr Mattis added: "We can anticipate, at best, a bumpy road to the negotiations".

"All these (promoted) guys are top Kim Jong Un guys", said Michael Madden, author of the highly respected North Korea Leadership Watch blog.

No date has been given for the summit, which would be the first public meeting between Kim and another head of state in Pyongyang.

Trump said one thing that could come out of the summit is an agreement formally ending the 1950-53 Korean War, which was concluded only with a truce, not a peace treaty.

South Korea's unification and defence ministries declined to confirm the report, while an official at the Unification Ministry said the government was watching the North's leadership very closely.

"It looks like they needed someone who can have a firm grip on the military and dynamically push ahead with the new policies amid changes in US-North Korea relations", he added.

In 2016, the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, released a report that placed gene editing technology on a par with nuclear weapons as a threat to United States national security.

Citing an unnamed intelligence official, Yonhap said No Kwang-chol, first vice minister of the Ministry of People's Armed Forces, had replaced Pak Yong-sik as defence chief, while Ri Myong-su was replaced by his deputy, Ri Yong-gil.

Kim Jong Un is also likely expecting to receive more global economic aid and investment soon as part of the ongoing talks and he wants to prevent corruption that plagued some past projects, Madden said.

"Japan, Korea and the US continue to agree that pressure is needed to be applied on North Korea", Onodera told reporters after his meeting with Mattis and South Korean Defense Minister Song Young-moo on the sidelines of the Shangri-la Dialogue. "North Korea will receive relief only when it demonstrates verifiable and irreversible steps to denuclearization".
