The former Beatle also explained how "Let It Be" came from a dream he had in the '60s in which his deceased mother reassured him that "It's going to be okay".

While belting out the likes of Drive My Car, Penny Lane and Let It Be, Corden had to wipe away the tears after being overwhelmed by the situation.

Then they pulled up at the home where he lived during his late teen years, and where he and John Lennon wrote their hit songs.

The pair started the show singing the Beatles hit Drive My Car, while cruising through the city, replacing the song's "beep beeps" with honks of the horn. And I remember them playing me that.

While the pair drove through the streets of McCartney's hometown of Liverpool, they belted out beloved Beatles songs before the segment got unprecedentedly deep and emotional. "We expected it to last 10 years, but it keeps going on, and on, and on", McCartney says, "and it keeps being relevant".

Sir Paul sits down at the piano and plays When I'm 64.

But then, out of nowhere, Taylor Swift stood up and said: "I'll do a song!"

Corden said it was the "most handsome story" he had ever heard, before singing a teary rendition of the song.

"Hi, I'm Paul McCartney", he said (needlessly) introducing himself to the homeowner. Posing as a regular bartender, Corden served a drink or two before asking a patron to select a song on the jukebox.

As homecoming gigs for one of the world's biggest rock stars go, it was fairly low key: a small band on a slightly bigger stage in a local pub. Corden was lucky enough to be invited onstage to join McCartney to bring down the house - which contained a few stunned, teary-eyed fans - with an all-voices-on-deck rendition of "Hey Jude".
