Mr Gayford, known in New Zealand as the "first bloke", is the presenter of a fishing show, and Ms Ardern was the youngest New Zealand PM in 150 years, but she said they would not put pressure on their new baby.

Many in New Zealand and around the world had held up Ardern's pregnancy - just the second time an elected leader had given birth in office since Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto in 1990 - as a symbol of progress for women.

Laurell Ardern said she'd had people come up to her saying that her daughter had been an inspiration, including one woman who anxious a job was too hard for her, but then thought 'Well, if Jacinda can do it, I will do it'.

Then, Gayford will take care of the baby and will travel with Ardern between their Auckland home and the capital, Wellington, as well as on worldwide engagements.

"Te Aroha", the name of a rural town on New Zealand's North Island, was chosen to reflect Ms Ardern's family history. Jacinda Ardern and her spouse live demonstrating this is lovely to see, and may this freedom extend to more of us.

"It means bright and radiant, and snow, which seem like a good combination for Matariki and for solstice".

"We'll do what every other parent does and learn the little nuances of the way that Neve wants to work", she said. Te Aroha was something we settled on quite early.

"It was pretty special", she added.

Proving that she's not that different from mums everywhere, Ardern had the briefest moment baby brain, accidentally referring to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as the Duke and Duchess of Essex. "Clarke's been as much of a role model here as I am".

Ardern delivered her 3.31 kg (7.3 lb) daughter in the country's largest public hospital on Thursday afternoon with her partner, television presenter Clarke Gayford, at her side.

Gayford tweeted the same photo of the happy couple and their newborn baby on Twitter, saying: "So happy to announce our little girl has finally arrived!"

Ardern was presented with the booties during her trip to Sydney in March.

Ardern has had little sleep over the past few days, with the baby also described as being "very alert and one hungry baby".

It's the couple's first child together, and comes eight months after the 37 year old was sworn in as Prime Minister.

Ardern's office said Saturday she plans to make her first public appearance since the birth when she leaves Auckland City Hospital on Sunday morning.
