Indeed, there were similar scenes over at the Mordovia Arena in Saransk, where Japan fans spent their time politely tidying up after themselves in the wake of their side's 2-1 win against Colombia.

Fastidious Japanese fans took a brief break from celebrating a historic and shock World Cup victory over Colombia to clean up rubbish discarded on the floor of the stadium, earning them praise and inspiring other nations to follow suit.

But instead of going wild in the stands and then going off to celebrate on the streets of Russian Federation, some supporters chose to stay behind and help clean up litter.

That's what the BBC is reporting about fans of "Samurai Blue", the Japanese national soccer team that beat Colombia's players 2-1 Tuesday in Russian Federation. "An important aspect of Japanese society is making sure that everything is absolutely clean, and that's the case in all sporting events", sports reporter Scott McIntyre says.

"There's definitely been a decline", said former Nigeria global Peter Odemwingie, who played at the last two World Cups and is now working as a BBC pundit in Russian Federation.

Several viral videos show Japanese fans systematically picking up and disposing of trash into plastic bags while donning Blue Samurai jerseys.

"Cleaning up after football matches is an extension of basic behaviors that are taught in school, where the children clean their school classrooms and hallways", North told the BBC.

Japan and Senegal face each other in a Group H match on Sunday, June 24.

Thus far, the World Cup has been hard to predict, with some of the best teams falling to underdogs and confounding the experts.
