The "Ulchi Freedom Guardian" drill will not take place this year as it did last year, an official told Reuters.

Activists place an unofficial unified Korea flag on a wall in front of the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea building in Los Angeles, California on June 8, 2018, where Korean-Americans and their supporters gathered in a call for peace and a formal end to the Korean War, replacing the 1953 armistice with a permanent peace treaty, ahead of the June 12 summit between the leaders of the United States and North Korea FREDERIC J.

The United States has formally suspended a major military exercise with South Korea that was scheduled for August.

The Pentagon confirmed the suspension, adding in a statement there would be a meeting of the secretaries of defence and state as well as Trump's national security adviser on the issue this week.

Shortly after his Singapore summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on June 12, US President Donald Trump unveiled his plan to stop "provocative, inappropriate and expensive" war games with the South, which Pyongyang has decried as an "invasion rehearsal", Yonhap news agency reported.

His announcement appeared to come as a surprise to both the USA military and Seoul, and was not written in the official agreement signed between Trump and Kim on June 12. The U.S. has sent B-1B aircraft from Guam on bombing runs over South Korean ranges, sometimes as a show of force after North Korean missile tests.

His statement appeared to catch both South Korea and the Pentagon by surprise, but they presented a united front in cancelling the upcoming exercise.

South Korea's foreign minister said Wednesday that all current sanctions on North Korea will remain until the North takes concrete actions toward achieving complete denuclearization.

One official said "a sizable number" of remains were expected to be handed over, but declined to give a specific number given the unpredictability of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Military exercises with other countries in the Pacific will continue. Significant lobbying is also underway by South Korean entrepreneurs to restart the inter-Korean industrial complex in North Korea's Kaesong - whose operations were halted by Seoul amid military tensions in 2016.

Earlier this year, the Pentagon and the South Korea military postponed Key Resolve and Foal Eagle military exercises until after the Winter Olympics and para-olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Certain aspects of the exercises and North Korea's responses have been especially sensitive. "We would of course be rooting for the South, even when inter-Korean relations are frosty", said Hong.

Critics in Congress have warned that ending joint drills could weaken the military alliance between the US and South Korea, which hosts 28,500 American troops. "I think what is left now is how completely and swiftly we implement such a wonderful agreement", he said.
