The Sri Lankan players refused to take the field on the third day of the match in St Lucia on Saturday, delaying the resumption of play for nearly two hours, after the umpires Aleem Dar and Ian Gould had changed the ball and awarded West Indies five penalty runs.
The Sri Lanka Cricket board later said in a statement that the team protested the decision taken by the umpires citing "Changing the Condition of the Ball" and had refused to take to the field.
Windies were also awarded the 5 runs as the on-field umpires Aleem Dar and Ian Gould confirmed that the condition of the ball was changed.
But an hour has gone and we are still no closer to the start of the third day's play as West Indies trail Sri Lanka by 135 runs with eight wickets in hand.
It's understood one of the main reasons Sri Lanka didn't take to the field was because the umpires only informed them of the ball charge 10 minutes before the start of play, without any footage as evidence.
Sri Lanka Cricket released a statement saying its players "have not engaged in any wrongdoing" and that the team had taken to the field "under protest".
Match officials charged Chandimal after television footage from the final session's play on Friday appeared to show the captain taking candies out from his left pocket and putting these in his mouth, before applying the artificial substance to the ball which the umpires viewed as an attempt to change its condition. He was shining the ball and had bandages on like many players do.
West Indies won the first test of the three-match series by 226 runs.
The Pakistanis did not return to the field after tea on the fourth day and the umpires deemed this to mean they had forfeited the match, even though Pakistan later said they were willing to play. Opening batsman Cameron Bancroft, the player caught on camera applying sandpaper to the ball, was banned for nine months.
Steve Smith, along with David Warner, was handed a one-year ban from both domestic and global cricket by Cricket Australia while batsman Bancroft was handed a nine-month suspension for their involvement in the incident.
