The Minister also led a Walk in Abuja to sensitise Nigerians on the negative impact of indiscriminate disposal of waste plastics in the country.

Greenpeace warns that commitments on making plastic packaging recyclable and compostable will do little to turn the tide on plastic pollution, and that companies and government need to focus on reductions and eliminations of single-use plastics production if they are serious about tackling this issue.

"To meet the rising tide of plastics, we urgently need strong government leadership and intervention", the report said.

Fahmy said during the celebrations of the World Environment Day that bags made of recycled fabric are a better alternative for plastic, adding that plastic bags will no longer be available for free.

By 2050, it is estimated that there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans.

Maharashtra has banned the use of plastic, but the Gujarat government is citing the probable loss of jobs to avoid such a measure.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged everybody to stop using single-use plastics which have reached astronomical numbers.

But there are signs of action to limit plastic pollution, which harms life in the oceans, contaminates soils and releases toxic chemicals when burnt.
