  • Harley, stung by tariffs, shifts some production overseas

Harley-Davidson Inc is enduring a third day of attacks on Twitter by Donald Trump, with the president again misconstruing the iconic U.S. motorcycle maker's business.

Wednesday he tweeted: "Harley-Davidson should stay 100% in America, with the people that got you your success".

Trump has also threatened Harley-Davidson with a "big tax" on bikes which are manufactured overseas and then imported into the US.

He accused India of charging tariffs as high as 100% on imported American products and called for them to be removed.

Trump says on Twitter, "We won't forget, and neither will your customers or your now very HAPPY competitors!"

Harley-Davidson said Monday it was moving production of motorcycles sold in Europe from USA factories to facilities overseas because of retaliatory tariffs it faces in an escalating trade dispute between involving Trump's administration and the European Union. The company doesn't have specific information on where production for the European Union will take place, he said.

European Union officials, meanwhile, suggested Trump had only himself to blame for the falling-out with a company he had previously hailed as "a true American icon".

Trump recently imposed steep tariffs on aluminum and steel imported from Canada, Mexico and Europe in his bid to level the trade playing field and reduce trade deficits between the USA and its trade partners.

Harley-Davidson announced the closing of a factory in Missouri in January, but the reason for that was slumping domestic sales numbers.

"Earlier this year, Harley-Davidson said they would move much of their plant operations in Kansas City to Thailand".

It said that shifting targeted production from the USA to worldwide facilities could take at least nine to 18 months to be fully completed. Hence, they were just using Tariffs/Trade War as an excuse.

S&P's rating for Harley is A-minus - not sterling but in the top tier.

It follows a proposed plan by Harley-Davidson to move some of its production overseas.

"Harley-Davidson maintains a strong commitment to USA -based manufacturing which is valued by riders globally", the company said Monday.

The iconic motorcycle brand is the latest U.S. corporation to run afoul of the U.S. president, who has attacked Amazon as a tax dodger and scamming the U.S. Postal Service.

Harley-Davidson executives met with Trump at the White House past year after Trump canceled a visit to the company's headquarters in Milwaukee because protests had been planned.
