A Blood Moon Is Rising This Weekend - Here's How to See It

  • The eclipse will not be visible from North America

Andrew Batchelor, founder of Dundee Culture, said: "The longest lunar eclipse this century takes place on Friday".

The total lunar eclipse on July 28 can also be viewed from South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. According to specialists, the eclipse of July 27, 2018 is termed the longest lunar eclipse of the twenty-first century, because it should last about 103 minutes.

The Royal Astronomical Society said: 'Sometimes the eclipsed moon is a deep red colour, nearly disappearing from view, and sometimes it can be quite bright.

This happens because blue light undergoes stronger atmospheric scattering, so red light will be the most dominant color highlighted as sunlight passes through our atmosphere and casts it on the moon. The total eclipse will last up to 1.43 hours.

So the Moon during the Eclipse can be red, brown, copper-red or even orange. But the night-time transformation of the moon into a bloody-red orb can be seen by anyone on the Earth below while it is night. Mars will be one of four planets visible to the naked eye on eclipse night the others include Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn.

"People on the east coast will not see the moon leave the [Earth's] shadow", Australian National University astronomer Dr Brad Tucker was quoted by Canberra Times as saying.

When the full moon moves into Earth's shadow, it will darken, but it won't disappear.

Be very afraid - a "blood moon" is coming, accompanied by Mars, the God of War, shining more fiercely than it has for years. The moon will go through the center of the Earth's shadow, offering to ascend to what is known as the Deep Red Blood Moon.

"Totality is the moment that the moon is passing through the darkest part of the Earth's shadow", Dr. Jackie Flaherty, an astrophysicist at the American Museum of Natural History, tells TIME. Sorry, North America, you'll need to watch online instead.

The outcome is generally that a solar eclipse is only seen by a relative few who fall beneath the moon's masking orb.

For the second phase, as the moon continues on its orbit, there will be another partial lunar eclipse, which will be visible from around 2:43 am IST. The approach of Mars on July 31 will bring the two planets closest and the planet Mars to be seen brightest since 2003.
