- President Donald Trump has ordered US flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of the victims of the Capital Gazette shooting, FOX News reports.

The Baltimore Sun reported Monday that Mr. Trump denied the request made over the weekend by Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley, who is a Democrat, to honor the slain journalists by setting the White House flags at half-mast.

The White House said Mr Trump ordered the flags lowered as soon as he learned of the Annapolis mayor's request.

People walk in silence during a vigil in response to the shooting in the Capital Gazette newsroom.

The proclamation orders flags at the White House and other federal buildings and ships to be lowered until sunset Tuesday. "Americans across the country are united in calling upon God to be with the victims and bring aid and comfort to their families and friends".

"Obviously, I'm disappointed, you know?" "This was an attack on the press".

Before receiving a call from Sanders, Buckley said his understanding was that the request had been denied.

"At this point in time, it would start to polarise people and I don't want to make people angry", Mr Buckley, 55, who moved to the U.S. in 1992 and has become a successful restaurant owner in Annapolis, said. So it happened." "I'm not sure on the process but there's certain protocol that is followed.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) has also ordered state flags flown at half-mast.

President Donald Trump's press secretary Sarah Huckabee-Sanders called Buckley this morning to inform him of the decision.

Sanders, for her part, said Tuesday that "we have a great deal of respect for the press". At Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., 17 died, and at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas, 10 were killed.
