Barcelona Sign Malcom From Bordeaux After Roma Drama

Barcelona have agreed a deal to sign Malcom from Bordeaux for an initial €41 million (£36.5m) just a day after Roma announced they had a deal of their own.

He is, however, set to continue his development in Catalunya as he prepares to enter into a five-year deal.

Barcelona made contact with Bordeaux following the failure to sign Brazil global Willian from Chelsea and, according to Italian media reports, made a bid larger than the reported fee of 38 million euros ($44.4 million) struck with Roma.

The La Liga champions had previously made reported bids of upto £55 million to sign Willian but when Chelsea rejected their bid they looked elsewhere and moved for Malcom. Instead, terms were being negotiated with Barca, who had gazumped Roma's bid, which was reported to have been in the region of €32m.

In a statement on the website the club announced, "FC Barcelona and Girondins de Bordeaux have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Malcom Filipe Silva de Oliveira".

He spent three seasons with Bordeaux, scoring 23 goals in 96 appearances, and is yet to represent Brazil at senior level.

Unsurprisingly, the Sporting Director of AS Roma, Monchi, is disappointed and confused by the news that a deal he thought was done was spoiled at the last minute by an approach from Barça.
