A total lunar eclipse happens when the sun, Earth and moon are aligned, with Earth blocking the sun's light from fully reaching the moon.

The totality, which, you may recall, is when the Earth's shadow covers the moon and casts the world into darkness, will last one hour and 43 minutes.

However, the partial eclipse will be visible for nearly four hours.

On the east coast of Australia, the eclipse began at 3.14am (AEST), with the Earth's shadow slowly taking a bite out of the pearly white full moon.

Dr Jacob said: "Anyone on that night-side of the Earth would be able to see the moon go into the eclipse".

In the United Kingdom the partial eclipse will begin at 8.30pm, the total eclipse will occur between 9.20pm with the moon visible to the south-east, until 10.13pm.

The best place to see it was in central Scotland and Oxfordshire where the clouds parted allowing people to see the longest lunar eclipse so far this century.

The July 27 Blood Moon eclipse, the longest lunar eclipse this century can be seen from Taiwan overnight on July 27-28.

While this morning's lunar eclipse was long, they can be longer - up to one hour and 47 minutes. You can see the live stream below: If you aren't aware, a lunar eclipse takes place when Earth comes in between the Sun and the Moon. In fact, this phenomenon of the moon appearing small is called micro moon.

During the eclipse, the moon turned into a deep-copper-toned object, in what is commonly (but not scientifically) known as "blood moon".

Not all the lunar eclipses will lead to a "bloody" show. Friday, July 27, will be a date to remember, as the total lunar eclipse will be visible to the naked eye throughout Morocco.

The term "blood moon" was popularised by Christian pastor John Hagee in 2013 following the release of the book Four Blood Moons, which highlighted a lunar sequence of four total eclipses that occurred in 2014/15.

The most dramatic is the total lunar eclipse, in which the earth's shadow covers the moon.

A total lunar eclipse happens when Earth takes position in a straight line between the moon and sun, blotting out the direct sunlight that normally makes our satellite glow whitish-yellow. Also, the Red wavelengths are less dispersed than the violet and blue wavelengths, the Moon appears Red in colour.

"It starts with a partial eclipse at 7:24 p.m".

"The moon was a lot paler pink than I expected - a attractive sight in the western sky".
