  • Maurizio Sarri is the favourite to succeed fellow Italian Antonio Conte as Chelsea boss

Conte's future was finally resolved after months of speculation and despite the Italian overseeing pre-season training earlier this week.

The 26-year-old midfielder, who follows Sarri to Stamford Bridge from Naples, has signed a five-year deal having been heavily linked with a switch to Premier League champions Manchester City.

Conte, who is reportedly set to be replaced by former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri, also led Chelsea to the 2016-17 Premier League title in his first season as boss.

Antonio Conte was magnanimous about his time at Chelsea and made no reference to any ill-feeling in a statement issued by the League Managers' Association following his sacking.

"His record as a manager speaks for itself, with a record-breaking Premier League season and FA Cup title to look back on with pride".

"We have no doubt that Antonio will go on to achieve many more successes in his career".

Chelsea's 64-word statement marks the end of a protracted process.

His predecessor - whose departure was rumoured throughout the last campaign as he appeared to be unhappy with the club's transfer decisions - lasted just two seasons.

Chelsea playmaker Cesc Fabregas and former captain John Terry both paid tribute to Conte, prior to the club's official announcement.

Chelsea have confirmed the appointment of Maurizio Sarri as their new head coach. The differences proved to be irreconcilable.

He had done little to hide his dissent over Chelsea's transfer business in the summer of 2017 and winter of 2017-18, making thinly-veiled criticisms of "the club". "Thank you for everything boss". "Best of luck, Maurizio!"

"They didn't compete past year in the Premier League and I think when you look at those circumstances, there is a chance of you losing your job - whoever you are", claimed Wise.

Sarri is the 13th permanent boss at Chelsea since Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought the club in June 2003 and the sixth Italian to get the job.

Chelsea have also indefinitely postponed plans to rebuild Stamford Bridge in a scheme which would cost more than £1billion. Can they compete with the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United?

The Blues leave for Western Australia next Wednesday and will hope Sarri is on board.

His first game in charge will be in the friendly with Perth Glory on July 23.
