  • Tiger Woods reacts during the final round of the British Open Championship at Carnoustie

Carnoustie: Francesco Molinari insisted Costantino Rocca would remain his "hero and idol" after succeeding where his compatriot failed narrowly by becoming the first Italian to win the British Open.

But McIlroy produced just the sort of burst he has become renowned for.

To play the weekend without dropping a shot - his double bogey at 17 on Friday were the last shots he dropped as he shot 65-69 on the weekend - was impressive, he admitted.

Woods held the lead after 60 holes at the 147th Open Championship.

Ultimately, they were just three more players to be denied by the ice-cold Molinari.

"That's what I thought", said McIlroy. "That was a real positive for me, and it renewed the love of the Open for me".

While Molinari was making his bleary way to London on three hours' sleep on Monday and finding it hard to let the jug out of his sight, Rocca was to be found 25 miles from Carnoustie on the Old Course, preparing for the Senior Open this week.

And he was joined in the lead by Rory McIlroy who knocked in a fabulous eagle on 14 on his way to a round of 70 to finish six under before Molinari overtook them both. Francesco Molinari was paired with Woods in the final round of the Open Championship and ended up winning the tournament-even with Woods breathing down his neck. The Italian is a different player now however and will be an excellent partner in the fourballs with his laser like precision off the tee and pure ball striking.

Whether Tiger Woods will ever match Jack Nicklaus' 18 major titles remains to be seen, but as long as he remains eligible for Sunday golf, advertisers will want to share the spotlight with him.

The 14-times major champion began the day four shots adrift of fellow Americans Jordan Spieth, Xander Schauffele and Kevin Kisner but with a warm westerly breeze playing havoc, the 42-year-old mounted a thrilling early charge.

"He's like, 'He hasn't been in this position in 10 years, and you've been here how many times in the last three years?' He was throwing it back at me", Spieth said. Either that, or they're a little bit over-served (with drink).

Yesterday, people on Twitter were proclaiming Tiger is back, sharing some greatest hits from Woods' incredible career.

"There were a lot of big names up there and it was nice to be a part of it".

"I didn't get off to a great start, but I hung in there, and I have no regrets". I played the way I wanted to play this week.

"He improved a lot the last two years and I always say, "if I'm still the best player in Italy after 20 years, I don't do a very good job".
