They are among more than 135, mostly unarmed, Palestinians killed by Israeli fire since border protests began at the end of March.

The situation in the Middle East erupted today, as Israel launched a "wide-scale attack" against terrorists in the Gaza Strip.

Israel has not officially confirmed that a truce is in effect, though it appears to have taken the position of halting strikes as long as Gazans stop attacks and provocations.

Israel has yet to confirm the agreement, but the army said in a statement on Saturday that communities near Gaza could return to normal activity, according to the Israeli daily Haaretz. He was the first Israeli combatant to been killed in the area since the last full-scale conflict with Gaza's rulers, Hamas, in 2014.

Israel said its aircraft and tanks had struck dozens of targets belonging to Hamas and across the Gaza Strip, including a drone warehouse, aerial defence systems and observation posts.

In recent days, the Israeli army has started to open fire at groups attempting to launch kites attached to cans of petrol that have torched close to 3,000 hectares (7,410 acres) of Israeli fields.

Later Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said the United Nations and Egypt had helped negotiate a ceasefire, with an agreement reached "to return to the previous state of calm between the (Israeli) occupation and the Palestinian factions". But here has been disagreement over how to do that, with concern in many quarters that aid should not bolster Hamas. Four Palestinians were killed, of which three were Hamas militants.

On Saturday funerals were held for the dead.

Relatives react as they arrive at the al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City where the body of Mohammed Badwan was brought after he was shot dead by Israeli forces. His family has been notified. His name was not immediately published.

During the flare-up which lasted several hours, the Israeli military said its jets and tanks hit 68 Hamas targets, and destroyed "buildings and infrastructures and revoked significant military and command and control capabilities".

Air raids continued into Friday evening, with a number of explosions in different parts of Gaza, AFP correspondents said.

Israel's top leadership convened late into the night Friday at military headquarters to discuss potential actions. "IDF troops are on high alert and will continue to operate in order to ensure the safety of Israeli civilians".

"Unless it can be consolidated and translated into a more permanent agreement that includes an easing of Israeli restrictions then we will continue to witness ever more frequent flareups".
