Officials of the United States and North Korea met at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom on Sunday for talks about repatriating the remains of US troops killed during the 1950-53 Korean War.

Recovering and repatriating the remains of the American troops was one of the agreements that US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un reached during their historic June 12 summit in Singapore.

Kim praised Trump for "energetic and extraordinary efforts made by Your Excellency Mr. President for the improvement of relations between the two countries and the faithful implementation of the joint statement".

US and North Korean officials had originally planned to have talks on the issue of remains on Thursday in Panmunjeom, but the North did not show up.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency, citing South Korean government and USA military sources, said the negotiations had begun at 0100 GMT at the border village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas.

The Pentagon has said North Korean officials have indicated in the past they have the remains of as many as 200 USA troops.

Three vehicles of US forces in South Korea, flying United Nations flags, were spotted heading to the border earlier in the day, Yonhap said.

Follow-up talks between Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and North Korean senior officials had a rocky start, with Pyongyang accusing Washington of making "unilateral and gangster-like" demands.

Sunday's talks were expected to focus on such details as when and how the remains should be transferred.

In the meeting at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjeom, the two sides were to discuss how and when to repatriate the remains, according to USA officials.
