McCain: Trump's meeting with Putin 'should not move forward'

Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) argued that Trump should use the planned meeting to confront Putin over the new charges and pressure him on his alleged role in election meddling.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is billing a pre-existing plan to grow military spending by 70 per cent over the next 10 years as Canada's answer to Donald Trump's persistent demand that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies spend two per cent of their GDP on defence.

"I also said that this incredible woman right here is doing a great job, doing a fantastic job", Trump said, justifying his comments.

"President Trump should cancel his meeting with Vladimir Putin until Russian Federation takes demonstrable and transparent steps to prove that they won't interfere in future elections", the New York Democrat said.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he expected Donald Trump to show some "political will" to move towards normalising relations.

The last, brief meeting between Putin and Trump took place in November 2017 in Vietnam during an Apec summit. "The Russian state has never interfered and has no intention of interfering in the US elections", Putin's foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said Friday. I will absolutely bring that up.

Trump is reported to have spoken of "grave consequences" if allies did not meet their 2 percent of GDP defense spending targets, saying that the United States could "go our own way" if his demands were not met. "I don't think you'll have any, 'Gee, I did it, I did it, you got me.' There won't be a Perry Mason here I don't think", he continued.

McCain, though the only republican to have spoken out, is not alone in his calls for Trump to cancel the meeting.

She highlighted the attack on the Skripals as an example of "a well-established pattern of Russian behaviour to undermine our democracies and damage our interests around the world".

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allied leaders, who Trump met with in Brussels earlier this week, are skeptical about whether he will be firm enough with the Russian leader, who has denied the USA intelligence community's conclusion that Russia interfered in the election with the intent of helping Trump win.

"I strongly believe that every individual who helped carry it out - foreign or domestic - should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law", she said.

Trump said he did not think Russian Federation would have invaded Crimea if he had been in the White House at the time.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders on Friday said the summit was still moving forward and there were no plans to cancel it. President George H.W. Bush and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev also held a meeting in Helsinki about tensions in the Middle East.
