Nadal-Djokovic match suspended at Wimbledon after 3rd set

In the Wimbledon final Sunday, Anderson will face the victor of the Rafael Nadal-Novak Djokovic match, which continued from Friday to Saturday because of the long-delayed start time after Anderson and Isner's brutally long semifinal.

The match wasn't just notable because it was long. When both are on song, it remains, in my opinion, the best match-up in tennis.

World number one Rafael Nadal exited the Wimbledon tournament after an epic contest against Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals on Saturday.

Anderson added that he would like to see more South African players come through to the top in future.

While Anderson-Isner was mostly a serving duel with a few longer rallies thrown in, Djokovic and Nadal repeatedly slugged it out from the baseline, chasing each other around the court and coming up with spectacular winners from every corner.

Nadal will regret his missed opportunity the night before, when he was in the ascendancy but passed up two set points. Because the match started Friday with the roof closed, it remained closed when Nadal and Djokovic took the court to resume action Saturday.

Yet they were left waiting in the locker room, hours on end, while the undercard with no end carried on.

Anderson finished the match with 49 aces and 118 winners; Isner had 53 aces and 129 winners. But there were, in fact, several breaks of serve.

The Spaniard took the fourth set to pull even.

The fifth set was tight through the early going.

It's the first time in almost a century that a South African's made it to the end of the competition, and no South African has ever won the tournament.

The match continued its fiery back-and-forth with Nadal escaping match point 16 games into the final set, bringing spectators to their feet. For Anderson, he will rely heavily on his serve to bother the Serbian.

It's hard to believe the quality of Sunday's men's final won't be diminished by the unusual circumstances of the semifinals that preceded it.

It's his first final appearance at a Grand Slam since losing the 2016 US Open championship match to Stan Wawrinka.

"I told him that we are all rooting for him".

Nadal continued: "In that moment I understood the rationale, but I did not understand that we would play indoor today unless we both agreed to play outdoor, and evidently, we did not agree".

Wimbledon is one of the showpiece events of the BBC's sports coverage - but it will have to give way to the World Cup final at least in part.

That set the record for the longest semi-final at the tournament and became the second longest Grand Slam singles match ever played.

Following his defeat Friday, Isner said the time was "overdue" to institute fifth-set tiebreaks - for the good of players, fans and broadcasters alike.

Djokovic was under the cosh in the next but two booming serves saved two break points and suddenly Nadal found himself at 0-30 as he served to stay in the match.
