  • Most Wanted French Thief's Epic Jailbreak Dramatic Helicopter Escape

It marked the second time in less than five years that Faid has absconded from a maximum-security penitentiary.

The helicopter was later found in a north-eastern suburb of the French capital, they said, adding that a police search has been launched across the entire Paris region.

"It was a spectacular escape".

According to reports, three accomplices, armed with Kalashnikovs, showed up at the prison entrance demanding Faid's release.

The commandos also used smoke bombs to shield their movements from surveillance cameras, Belloubet said.

Redoine Faïd, 46, had been serving a 25-year sentence at a suburban Paris jail for a 2010 failed robbery in which a 26-year-old police officer was killed. Gunmen then took Faid from the visiting room where he was and fled in the helicopter, the sources said.

Armed with a pistol, he briefly took four guards hostage before escaping in a waiting getaway vehicle.

The helicopter was later found burned out in the town of Garges-les-Gonesse, in the northern suburbs of Paris. All the hostages were released unharmed.

In a dramatic style, Faid's associates hijacked a helicopter and made the pilot land it in a prison courtyard that was not protected by anti-aircraft setting. Unarmed guards said they could do nothing to prevent it. Early on Sunday afternoon, police sources told news channel France 3 that he had switched vehicles and was now in a white van.

In this photo dated November 22, 2010, notorious French criminal Redoine Faid poses prior to an interview with French all-news TV channel, LCI, as he was promoting his book, in Boulogne-Billancourt, outside Paris, France. In 2013, he managed to escape a prison in Lille, France. He briefly took four wardens hostage before being recaptured six weeks later in a cheap hotel room.

Redoine Faid previously said his life of crime was inspired by films such as "Scarface". He was arrested in 1998 after three years on the run in Switzerland and Israel, according to the French media.

Redoine Faid escaped from this French Jail with a helicopter flown by armed accomplices, July 1, 2018.

In 2009 Faïd wrote a book about his past and rise as a criminal in Paris' suburbs.

The 2010 robbery that he was imprisoned for involved the shooting of a female police officer.
